Kale was mucking out stables when the queen needed a new guard and chose the one man nobody else wanted. Her explanation is short: he is the only one who holds her gaze. Episode 1 gives him a post outside her chamber, a royal law that keeps his hands off her, and a loophole she points out with a smile, since the law says nothing about her hands. Episode 2 closes the door. She makes him bolt it, then sets her crown in his hands with a treason warning attached. Tomorrow the court picks her husband, which makes tonight her last say in the matter.

Why it clicks
