Riley First, Regina Next

About this video

Her stepmother's first look at the new boyfriend lasts a beat too long, and the evening has only just started.

Riley is dragging her boyfriend Jack to meet her stepmom Regina, whom she hasn't seen in ages. Riley chatters about college life, her stack of essays, long library nights and how sweet Jack has been, while Regina looks Jack over and compliments the strong man her stepdaughter found. The dancing starts in episode 1, and with it the realization that Regina is not simply being polite. Episode 2 turns the party chaotic: a spilled drink, an apology that rings hollow, Regina asking Jack for help in another room, and Riley wondering where everyone went.

Why it clicks

The setup is simple and sly: a cheerful girlfriend makes the introductions with no clue that her stepmom is taking notes on the boyfriend. Stepmom is the forbidden line here, while the free episodes keep to compliments, dancing and misdirection.

Watch it when: Dinner-party tension, charming small talk and one extremely well-dressed older woman with a plan.
